The Dark Night of the Soul Experience

Many people have had an experience that is often talked about in literature as the ‘dark night of the soul”. Wikipedia describes it this way:

Dark Night of the Soul is a term used to describe a specific phase in a person’s spiritual life. It is used as a metaphor to describe the experience of loneliness and desolation in one’s life. Though typically associated with a crisis of faith in the Roman Catholic tradition, it is commonly referenced by spiritual traditions throughout the world, and is generally accepted to be a universally inherent aspect of spiritual growth.

Of course, some people like to describe every depressive experience as a dark night experience. Perhaps this enables them to think better about themselves – after all, they wouldn’t have anything so common as a bad day. However, when you read descriptions of the experience from those who have genuinely been through it, you tend to become more descriminating about what you will include under this label.

So, what is the REAL dark night of the soul experience? That is the question we will  try to answer in this website.

To do so we will explore accounts of it from art and literature, look at the way mystics have grappled with its meaning through the centuries, examine the findings of theologians and psychologists, and listen to the experiences of those who have found themselves deep into that dark night.

Of course, fascinating as it may be, and without diminishing the great value of such an experience, no one in their right mind would want to remain in such a state, so we will also check out ways of finding ones way back into the light, and list resources that will help people understand and deal with what is happening to them.

  1. With havin so much written content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement? My blog has a lot of unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my agreement. Do you know any solutions to help stop content from being stolen? I’d truly appreciate it.
